Authorities are investigating what caused a Father's Day boat collision on the Des Moines River that left one person dead and two others hospitalized.

The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on the river, upstream from Birdland Marina and near North High School, and involved two boats traveling opposite directions, The Des Moines Register reported.

The collision occurred between the Sixth Avenue and Second Avenue bridges.

Several witnesses reported they heard a loud boom and looked up to see bodies flying through the air, the paper reported.

The person killed was identified as Kelly Starrett, 49, a grandfather from West Des Moines. A hospital spokesman at Mercy Medical Center confirmed the death, according to the Register.

The names of the two people who were hospitalized have not been released.

“We were having a Father’s Day on the river for all the dads in the Starrett family,” a member of the Starrett family said. They later heard about “an emergency on the river” while unloading a boat at the Birdland Marina.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation.
