West Des Moines Muffin Shop Was Rocking, Alleged Burglars Didn’t Bother Knocking

Surveillance video shows what happened in midnight burglary.

The cook at a West Des Moines pastry shop told police that she had the music cranked up in the kitchen and didn’t hear a pair of burglars break the glass door to the business and get away with a cash register around midnight on Jan. 2.

The woman told West Des Moines Police Officer Curtis Russell that she discovered the burglary at My Favorite Muffin & Bagel Cafe, 4949 Westown Parkway, when she went to the front of the business to investigate what she thought was the ice machine overflowing.

That’s when she discovered the cash register, which contained about $350, had been stolen.

Multiple surveillance cameras recorded images of the crime, according to Russell’s report. The video shows two men outside the business putting on gloves. One is seen clearing out broken glass from the bottom of the door and crawling through the opening. They reportedly tried to open the cash register with a key, but were unsuccessful, so they picked up the cash register and carried it out.

According to the time stamp on the video, the suspects were in the business for only about 42 seconds and they had been gone for about four minutes when the employee discovered the theft.

Both suspects had covered their face with a stocking cap or hood, Russell reported.
