West Des Moines Newlyweds Come Home to Surprise After Honeymoon

They suspect the groom's "skateboard enthusiast" brother and his "shady" girlfriend of spoiling their celebration.

A West Des Moines couple may wish they’d opened congratulatory cards, many of them filled with money, after their Aug. 25 wedding instead of waiting to open them when they returned from their honeymoon to Colorado.

Six days later, the cards and the money inside – perhaps as much as $1,500 – were nowhere to be found. The cards contained cash as well as personal checks.

The second-degree theft case is being investigated by the . The couple think the groom’s brother – described in the police report as “a skateboard enthusiast with a ‘shady’ girlfriend” – is accused of helping himself to the booty while taking care of their dogs. He was the only person with authorized access to their home, according to the report.

The groom’s brother denied any involvement, according to Officer Jason Hatcher’s report.
