UPDATE: School Bus Driver Charged in Crash Causing $75,000 Damage to House

No injuries were reported Monday when a West Des Moines school bus plowed over a mailbox, struck a pickup and then crashed into a house.

Anthony Banks, the driver in a Monday school bus accident that caused $75,000 damage to a West Des Moines home, has been charged with failure to maintain control, police said in a statement today.

Banks, 42, of 1636 Hull Ave. in Des Moines was driving too fast for the icy conditions and lost control of the West Des Moines Community Schools bus, police said.

West Des Moines police are investigating what caused a school bus to leave the roadway at 7:41 a.m. and travel through several yards before before hitting a parked truck in a driveway and then a house.

There were 11 elementary children aboard the bus, police spokesman Lt. Jim Barrett said in a news release, but none was injured. The bus, parked truck and the house sustained extensive damage, he said.

The bus was southbound on 53rd Street when it struck the house at 503 53rd St., according to the release. Damage to house was estimated at $75,000, police said.

The crash also did an estimated $5,000 damage to a pickup parked in the house's driveway, police said, and damaged a tree in the yard. A crew from Bennett Tree Service in Des Moines was at scene Monday afternoon to trim the damaged tree.

Police said the driver of the school bus was Anthony Banks, 42, of 1636 Hull Ave. in Des Moines.

The accident investigation is ongoing and charges against the driver of the school bus are pending the conclusion of that investigation, Barrett said.

Damage to the school bus was estimated at $15,000, police said.
