West Des Moines Pool Crashers Seeking Cool Relief Get Into Hot Water
With overnight temperatures remaining in the 80s during last week's record heatwave, can group be blamed for late-night swim? Yes, police say.

Five people got into a bit of trouble last week for their late-night swim at a West Des Moines apartment complex.
It wasn’t just that the pool at at 8602 Westown Parkway had closed for the day. The townhouse complex manager had secured the gate with a big, heavy chain and they allegedly climbed over a fence to get to the cool relief. The other thing – the criminal thing – was that none of them lives at the complex.
A maintenance worker there told Officer D.J. Frunzar that pool crashing has been on the rise at the complex, especially late at night when residents are trying to sleep. That was the case early Saturday morning, when two different tenants called to complain about after-hours revelry.
When Frunzar questioned the five, they reportedly insisted they’d arrived at the pool about 8 o’clock the night before and stayed late to seek relief from blistering triple-digit heat. They reportedly claimed that no one asked them to leave after the pool closed and the gates were locked at 8:30 p.m.
No way it happened like that, the maintenance worker said, according to Frunzar’s report. The apartment manager “would have told anyone in the pool that it was closed,” according to the report.
Each of the five has been charged with criminal trespassing. They are:
- Aubrey Tyne Alshouse, 20, of 1579 N.W. 90th Court, Clive
- Lauren Nicole Wallace, 19, of 13329 Rocklyn Drive, Urbandale
- Chad Michael Stapes 20 of 5305 Colt Drive, West Des Moines
- Austin Earl Thomason, 20, of 632 S. Van Buren Drive, Iowa City
- Brandon Leo Plummer, 21, of 4221 159th St., Urbandale
All five had allegedly been drinking and all but Wallace appeared to be intoxicated and impaired, according to the report.
