West Des Moines Schools 'Encourage Procrastination' – Fair or Unfair Criticism?

West Des Moines Community School's online forum, Idea Share, is brimming with ideas and constructive criticism. How good a job do you think the school district is doing in turning out tomorrow's leaders?

Why has the United States fallen behind other countries in turning out leaders? That’s a question a  patron asks on IdeaShare, the school district’s online forum.

The user, the parent of five children who attended and , suggests part of the reason is that students aren’t held accountable.

“Students are allowed to turn in homework at any time in the quarter and still be awarded points for work. This encourages early procrastination for undisciplined students and continues to compound the issue by piling up to eventual feelings of 'it can't be done.' This results in poor example setting for what is ahead in 'real life.'”

IdeaShare is an extension of five community forums conducted by Superintendent Peter Ansingh during the spring. The purpose, according to the website, is to “gather input about what we are doing well as a school district and what we can do to get better in educating the children of our community.”
