West Des Moines Taking Applications for Citizens Police Academy Training

Course offers a glimpse into the practices, policies and procedures governing the west Des Moines Police Department.

West Des Moines will be holding its 12th Citizen’s Police Academy starting March 5. The academy is 10 weeks long and meets  every Tuesday night from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.. (no class March 19 for spring break).

Course Description

The Citizen Police Academy is a 30-hour block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of the practices, policies, and procedures governing the West Des Moines Police Department.

The academy consists of ten three-hour sessions conducted on a weekly basis. Participants will also have the opportunity to do a ride-along with a Patrol Officer and observe dispatchers at the Westcom Communication Center.  

The comprehensive instruction covers different areas routinely addressed by local law enforcement. The sessions have been designed to incorporate an interactive format, providing the participants with a “hands on” experience whenever practical. Instructors are certified police officers, supervisors and other personnel with expertise in various areas.

Participants must be 18 to attend. The deadline to sign up is Feb.  21.
