West Des Moines Valley Senior Raising Money for Kids with Cancer Among Iowa’s Top Youth Volunteers

While volunteering to work on craft projects with kids with cancer, Katelyn Cinnamon wanted to do more. "They are some of the strongest, bravest, happiest kids I know," she said. "They deserve to have something to look forward to."

A Valley High School senior who spends some of her free time raising money to send critically ill kids to a weeklong Children’s Cancer Connection camp has been named one of Iowa’s top youth volunteers for 2013.

Katelyn Cinnamon was honored by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism, according to a story on the West Des Moines Community Schools web site.

According to the story, Cinnamon raised  thousands of dollars to purchase iPads for each exam room at the Blank Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology Clinic, and to send young cancer patients to a weeklong camp through the Children’s Cancer Connection.
