What's Open, What's Closed in West Des Moines on Christmas Day 2012?

Get your grocery shopping done before 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Most stores will be closing early for  the holidays.

If you find you're one ingredient away from a perfect holiday meal, don't despair. Most Casey’s General Stores and Kum & Go stores will be open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Here's a rundown of what's open and what's closed:

Federal, state, county and city  government offices will be closed on Christmas Day, except for essential emergency personnel.

Garbage and recycling pickup will be on schedule Monday, Dec. 24. Collection will be delayed on day for residents whose regular pickup day is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

There will be no mail delivery on Christmas Day.

Most  other retail stores will be closed.

Hy-Vee grocery stores will close at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and remain closed until Dec. 26. Hy-Vee has stores at 1990 Grand Ave., 1725 Jordan Creek Parkway, and 555 S. 51st St.

Dahl’s Foods stores at 5003 E.P. True Parkwayand 1208 Prospect Ave. will be closed.

Trader Joe’s will be closed.

Whole Foods Market will be closed.

The emergency rooms at Methodist West Hospital and Mercy West Lakes will be open.

The West Des Moines Public Library will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

West Des Moines Community Schools will be closed from Monday, Dec.24, through Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Dowling Catholic High School will be closed Monday, Dec. 24, through Wednesday, Jan. 2. Faculty return Thursday, Jan. 3, and the second semester begins Friday, Jan. 4.

Century 20 Jordan Creek and XD theaters are open all day.

Although there are some exceptions, the following chain restaurants will be closed at all locations on Christmas Day: Applebee’s, Arby’s, Cheesecake Factory, Chick-fil-A (both Jordan Creek Town Center and the stand-alone Mills Civic Parkway location), Chipotle, KFC, Olive Garden, PF Chang’s, Red Lobster, Red Robin and Wendy’s.

Most Starbucks locations will be open.

Call ahead at Buffalo Wild Wings, Burger King, Dominos, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald’s, Panda Express and Pizza Hut locations. Some locations are open on Christmas Day 2012.
