Plumbers recommend that homeowners turn off outside water service while they’re out of town and a West Des Moines couple may be wishing they’d heeded that advice.

When they returned to their home in the 1300 block of 89th Street after being out of town for several days, they heard water running outside and made a startling discovery:

Water had pooled in the back yard and the grass was saturated.

Then came more startling news from West Des Moines Water Works:

The excess water usage totaled $250, according to a report on file at the West Des Moines Police Department.

The homeowner said he wasn’t sure if he would have to replace the grass in his yard as a result of the prank.
