Here’s a Glimpse of the Restaurants Vying for Top Honors:
Fire Creek, 800 S. 50th St.: An upscale steakhouse and bar, Fire Creek has an elegant but casual atmosphere with stone fireplaces. In addition to steak, Fire Creek serves pasta dishes, seafood, salad, soups and appetizers, as well as an extensive wine list. Fire Creek also features live music (usually jazz) on Wednesdays. Make a reservation at 224-0500.
Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, 6075 Mills Civic Pkwy.: Longtime Greater Des Moines residents remember the Johnnie’s Vets Club Steak de Burgo recipe, which is reprised here. Menu items include other steaks, salads, appetizers, cocktails, signature seafood entrees and classic Italian entrees. Chef D.J. Frank supervises the kitchen. Make a reservation at 333-5665.
Waterfront Seafood Market, 2900 University Ave.: This seafood market, restaurant and oyster bar is owned by two brothers with a passion for high-quality seafood. Whenever possible, Waterfront Seafood Market buys its products direct from the docks, working with small fishermen and lobstermen to ensure a fresh selection. Make a reservation at 222-5106.
