With or Without Bikini Lines, New Business Offers a Healthy Tan

Brush aside concerns about melanoma and other skin cancers, premature aging and other harmful effects of UV rays and still get a healthy looking summer glow.

Traci Noll spent enough time working at tanning salons during high school and college to know there are healthier ways than tanning beds or spending hours in the sun to get a tan.

So the 26-year-old West Des Moines businesswoman opened Tanique Airbrush Tanning last month in the business park at 4949 Pleasant Street. Noll said she uses the same tanning solution used by Hollywood stars.

The active ingredient found in tanning solutions is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), derived from sugar cane,  reacts with the amino acids on the top layer of the skin to create the darkening reaction or tan. It is not absorbed into the body and is non-toxic. As the skin cells wear away, the color gradually fades just like a real sun tan.
