You Won’t Believe What Man Left Behind in West Des Moines Convenience Store

Police got an unusual call about abandoned property.

Methamphetamine, the homemade concoction the Drug Enforcement Administration says is one of the most addictive and destructive of street drugs, is known to cause forgetfulness and memory loss.

That might explain how an as-yet unidentified man came to leave behind 4.5 grams of a substance police say was meth while shopping last week at the Kum & Go convenience store at 196 S. 50th St. The whole thing was captured on closed circuit surveillance cameras, according to West Des Moines Police Officer Dan Wade’s report.

The allegedly forgetful customer selected a bottle of soda pop, set it on the counter and then wandered back to the pick out more merchandise. “He inadvertently dropped a small baggie containing a crystalline substance,” Wade wrote.

Two quick-thinking employees noticed the bag and hid it behind the counter. The customer returned to the counter to pay for the soda and other items, reportedly none the wiser about what had been left behind. He paid for the transaction with a debit card and left, according to the report.
