Dole was seriously hurt in World War II and was in and out of hospitals for nearly three years. He never regained full use of his right arm and the experience influenced him to become an advocate for veterans and the disabled community.

Dole helped raise private contributions to build the World War II Memorial in Washington and co-chaired a bipartisan commission to investigate problems with health care for the military and veterans. He championed the Americans with Disabilities Act, which outlawed discrimination against disabled people in the workforce and greatly improved their ability to enjoy everyday life by expanding access to shops, restaurants, hotels and public transportation.
