Make Your Dream Retirement a Reality at Tallgrass Creek

Kathy and Rip Fernholz enjoy friendship and freedom in retirement, making life at Tallgrass Creek better than they ever imagined.

When Frank "Rip" and Kathy Fernholz started exploring their senior living options, they did extensive research and attended informational events at a number of retirement communities.

"We were trying to understand our options and have a plan," says Rip.

One of the communities they visited was Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans. During a "Cookie Crawl," the couple toured homes and met current residents who welcomed them inside.

"The residents were so nice," Kathy recalls. "When we got in the car afterward, we both agreed--this could be great."

Now, as Tallgrass Creek residents, life is even better than they imagined!

"When we moved in, it all exceeded our hopes," Rip says. "And we quickly realized there was an added benefit we hadn't fully appreciated--not having to cook."

Fortuitous timing

While researching, Rip and Kathy assumed that their move was still years away. They were content in their former house just three miles from Tallgrass Creek, though maintenance and repairs were becoming a hassle.

But when a residence with their preferred floor plan unexpectedly became available, everything fell into place. By the end of October 2025, they were unpacking their boxes and settling into their new, maintenance-free home.

Thanks to the monthly service package, which bundles the costs of utilities, maintenance, repairs, meals, and more into one predictable bill, Rip and Kathy are able to truly enjoy this new chapter.

"It takes some getting used to. I ordered a water filter myself before learning I could just call General Services," Rip recalls, with a laugh. "That was a revelation."

Everyday ease

The convenience of having so many amenities and activities under one roof is a real benefit for the couple.

"Having everything available without having to brave the weather is great," says Kathy, who has already begun brushing up on her bridge skills with neighbors and looks forward to exploring fitness classes and sewing groups.

Rip, who remains active in the surrounding community, appreciates the simple accessibility. "Having the fitness center within walking distance is awesome," he notes. "There's no reason to get in a car and drive somewhere else."

The range of on-site dining options has also played an important role in their positive experience. "The food has exceeded my expectations," Kathy says. "The variety is great, and I have my favorites in each of the six restaurants. Not having to worry about what I'm going to cook for dinner is so freeing."

Rip agrees, saying, "Anyone who assumes retirement community food is predictable just needs to eat a meal here and look at the menus. There are plenty of options, and it's easy to find things you like."

Friendship comes naturally

Perhaps the biggest and most meaningful surprise has been how easy it is to connect with others.

"Meeting new friends has been so easy and fun," Kathy says. "We've had meals with many of our neighbors. There's a weekly social hour for our building, and we're even hosting a gathering for our floor next week. Everyone is so friendly."

Rip likens the community's social atmosphere to a return to earlier days. "When I told our doctor we were moving, he said, 'That's like going back to college,'" Rip recalls. "It's true! You see people throughout the day, at dinner, in the halls. Everyone greets you."

Compared to their former cul-de-sac, where social interaction was limited, the difference is striking. "At Tallgrass Creek, we're talking to our neighbors all the time," Rip says. "That kind of connection just happens naturally."

More independence

For those who worry about losing their independence with a move to a retirement community, Kathy offers reassurance. "I am just as independent as ever," Kathy says. "The only difference is where I lay my head at night."

Looking back, the Fernholzes agree that timing was everything. "We decided to come while we could still enjoy everything Tallgrass Creek has to offer," Kathy says. "It's taken a lot of pressure off us and our children, and we truly are enjoying it!"
