David and Jeri Lynn Randolph found their overnight experience was not only informative, it was also transformative.

Starting the search

Like many prospective residents, the Randolphs had done their research. After maintaining a large, three-story house in Kentucky for years, they began exploring retirement communities closer to family in Kansas that would provide a vibrant, carefree lifestyle.

"We started touring senior living facilities in the Kansas City area," recalls Jeri. After a few tours at Tallgrass Creek, it rose to the top of their list. "We wouldn't have to mow the yard or worry about the roof leaking. We could just move, meet friends, and enjoy life. It would be calm and easy. There's no comparison!"

She adds, "But I knew that I needed to stay here. We had visited multiple times, but I needed to see how [community life] really worked."

From curiosity to clarity

After checking in for their stay, they were invited to lunch with current residents, followed by an afternoon of games and socializing.

"The people here were just so kind," Jeri recalls. That sense of authenticity made an impression, as they felt comfortable asking questions about finances, dining, and day-to-day activities.

"We talked about the monthly service package, parking, storage, everything," she notes.

The Randolphs also explored on-site amenities further, participated in activities, and dined at a restaurant for dinner, all while being guided by residents who were happy to share memories of their own positive experiences.

"The next day, we stayed past check-out and played more cards. When we got home, we were so tired--but in the best way," says Jeri, with a smile.

Loving life

Today, the Randolphs are settled into their two-bedroom, two-bath residence with a balcony--the Pendleton design--and loving life. Jeri notes that staying overnight in a furnished suite helped them envision the kind of living space they wanted.

"We're very active. David plays billiards, cards, dominoes, and canasta. I do something almost every day. Everything is just great! Now, we don't have to worry about multiple bills; we just have one," Jeri says, referring to the monthly service package.

"The residents who were so kind to us during our stay are now our friends," she adds.

Resident Sue Rump, who also signed up for a Live the Life stay during her time on the Priority List, shares a similar experience.

"We were interacting with people who would potentially be our neighbors. That was the most meaningful," she says. In fact, one of her moments on campus led to a lifelong connection. "I met my best friend here in the parking lot!"
