Newest Residents Move Into Flint Hills Landing building

Tallgrass Creek resident Sherwin Chasen, one of the first people to move into Flint Hills Landing, enjoys playing pickleball with neighbors

When Flint Hills Landing, the ninth residence building at Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., opened in July, it marked the beginning of a new chapter--both for the community and its incoming residents.

In addition to 84 brand-new homes and a Life Enrichment Center, now Flint Hills Landing connects both neighborhoods through a new climate-controlled walkway.

"On the first floor, Flint Hills Landing connects to Meadowlark Terrace Clubhouse, and on the third floor, it links to Santa Fe Ridge Clubhouse," explains Sales Director Blake Marshall. "This means that residents can now get from one end of campus to the other without going outside."

Sherwin Chasen, one of Flint Hills Landing's first residents, appreciates that convenience, especially now that he has more free time to pursue his interests in retirement.

"I love that everything is interconnected," he says. "I just started playing indoor pickleball. They were very welcoming to me as a beginner, and I'm getting a little better every day!"

Finding the right fit

Sherwin and his late wife were Carlsbad, Calif., residents for 25 years.

"For several years, I thought it would make more sense to move from our house, especially as my wife's Parkinson's progressed," he says. "But she wasn't interested in leaving California."

After she passed in 2023, Sherwin reevaluated his senior living options. With one son and three grandchildren in California, and another son with two grandchildren in Olathe, Kans.--just 20 minutes from Tallgrass Creek--the decision became clear.

"For 25 years, we were near the Los Angeles group, and now I'm near the Kansas City group," says Sherwin, who was drawn to the community's size, amenities, and overall value.

"First, I like the size. The campus is beautiful, and there are about 1,000 people here, which gives me plenty of opportunities to meet lots of people; I'm very outgoing," he says. "Number two is the indoor pickleball court. And three, for the value compared to what I looked at in California and in Kansas City, Tallgrass Creek is exceptional."

He also loves the six on-site restaurants, offering different menus and atmospheres. "It's really nice because you have all kinds of variety," he says.

Perfect timing

Sherwin had no trouble finding the perfect residence for his lifestyle at Flint Hills Landing.

Because he enjoys hosting visiting family and friends, a two-bedroom home made the most sense for him.

"It was an easy decision," he recalls. "I was one of the first 10 people to send in a deposit."

Sherwin notes that his move was seamless, thanks to guidance and support from members of the Tallgrass Creek sales team.

"The sales team was very accommodating," he recalls. "Nancy [Worthington, the community's planning and moving consultant,] even gave me the names of three moving companies. Everything was so coordinated on the day I got here that I was able to sleep in my apartment the very next night."

A building like no other

Marshall notes that, for many residents, Flint Hills Landing represents more than just a new residence building.

"Tallgrass Creek continues to grow due to the high demand for our vibrant lifestyle," he explains. "With a Life Enrichment Center and convenient access to other clubhouses on campus, Flint Hills Landing is a hub of activity."

In fact, the Life Enrichment Center is now the largest gathering space on campus.

"It's great for hosting Town Hall meetings, plays, and special events," Marshall says. "The building also features a billiards table, fireplace, and comfortable sitting areas."

He adds, "Now, with all buildings connected, it's easier than ever before for residents to make the most of their retirement."

An exciting chapter

Since his move, Sherwin has wasted no time immersing himself in community life. In addition to playing pickleball, he enjoys attending educational presentations on campus and cheering on Kansas City's sports teams.

"I've already been to some Chiefs games. And the Kansas City Current, the women's soccer team, is so much fun," he says. "Tallgrass Creek is a good decision. I love my apartment, I've met great people, and I feel at home."

He adds, "Tallgrass Creek was the right move for me!"
