Restaurants at Tallgrass Creek Focus on Creativity, Collaboration, and Socialization

Linda Crosser and Judy Ogden enjoy a meal together in one of the six unique restaurants at Tallgrass Creek.

Sharing a meal is one of life's simplest pleasures, and at Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., it is also one of the easiest ways for residents to connect.

At six restaurants across the community, residents savor delicious dishes prepared by professional chefs in the company of friends, neighbors, and loved ones. From casual lunches to special dinner celebrations, dining is truly a highlight of life at Tallgrass Creek.

"It's an essential part of our lifestyle here," notes resident Linda Crosser.

Assistant Dining Director Jennifer Jackson agrees, saying, "Dining adds to the vibrant, social lifestyle. It serves as a cornerstone for community building."

Variety of venues

Each on-site restaurant features its own distinct menu and atmosphere. As resident Judy Ogden says, each one has its own "flair."

Milo's Café and Market, boasting both indoor and outdoor patio seating, offers gourmet sandwiches, soups, and fresh salads. The cafe's themed specials like Taco Tuesdays and the baked potato bar are always popular.

Schedule a casual catch-up with friends at Amelia's Café, where burgers, create-your-own salads, and house-made flatbread pizzas are on the menu.

Champions, offering a pub-style menu and large-screen TVs, is a great spot to watch a sports game with fellow fans. At Sunflower Bistro, with a neighborhood grill and bar feel, you'll find both traditional pub fare and healthy, contemporary options.

The Blue Sky Restaurant provides a refined dining experience with white tablecloths and a quieter ambiance. Similarly, the Heartland Restaurant offers a more elegant environment.

"I love having the opportunity to dine in multiple venues every week," Judy says. "I especially like Blue Sky. It's a quiet atmosphere and beautiful setting."

In addition, all meals are cooked to order using fresh ingredients, making it easy for chefs to meet individual dietary needs and preferences.

Powerful partnership

Behind every entree is a dining team committed to quality and care. "Our chefs and cooks put passion into every dish they prepare," Jackson says.

To ensure these dishes include ingredients and flavors residents will enjoy, Jackson and her team work

closely with the Resident Advisory Council's dining committee.

"The relationship between the dining team and the dining committee is excellent," says Judy, a member of the council. "They create avenues for resident feedback in numerous ways. This open communication leads to many enhancements that benefit all of us."

Linda, president of the committee, agrees. For instance, sharing feedback about takeout orders led the dining team to adjust the pickup location, making it more convenient for residents. Dining committee members have weighed in on monthly menu selections as well.

Residents can also share input directly through online surveys, comment cards, and events like "The Dish," where dining leaders address questions and gather suggestions.

Celebrating together

Throughout the year, the dining team hosts themed events and special celebrations, creating opportunities for residents to come together in fun and memorable ways. Chefs craft menus for each event that reflect the spirit of the occasion.

"For New Year's, Valentine's, and Christmas, they really outdo themselves, and everybody gets excited," Linda says.

"These events are about having fun and bringing people together," says Jackson. "They are opportunities to meet new people and bond with existing friends."

"Cowboy costumes are encouraged for the Western barbecue," Linda happily remarks, which always adds to the fun.

Time to socialize

While Linda and Judy love the fresh, flavorful dishes that are available to them, what really makes mealtime shine at Tallgrass Creek is the vibrant, social atmosphere.

"For couples at a table for four, they may be asked if another couple or individual can join them," Linda says of dining at the restaurants. "That's a fun and helpful way to meet people."

In fact, Judy says dining is so social that residents requested adding tables with seating for six and eight people to accommodate larger parties in the restaurants.

"This speaks to the relationships residents are eager to build," Jackson notes. "Our focus is on creating an environment where residents feel heard, can connect, and are excited about dining."

Clearly, at Tallgrass Creek, dining is about much more than what's on the plate. It's about meeting new people and strengthening existing friendships, making mealtime--and every day--more enjoyable.
