These Tallgrass Creek residents Moved Sooner Than Later--and are Glad They Did
Deede and Greg Harris moved to Tallgrass Creek when the perfect residence became available. "Our move was meant to be," says Greg.

Greg and Deede Harris had long imagined an active, maintenance-free retirement, but they decided to move sooner than planned after visiting Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans. Once they'd toured the community, the couple realized that the vibrant lifestyle they wanted was available right now.
"We just kept asking ourselves, 'Why wait?'" says Greg. "We're healthy, active, and in a good place financially. It made sense to move while we could fully enjoy everything the community has to offer."

At 75 and 74, the Harrises were happily settled in the house they built in 2001, just three miles east of Tallgrass Creek. But years of supporting their aging parents through emergency situations shaped their approach toward their future.
"We wanted to make this move on our terms, ahead of when potential health needs might arise," says Deede.

What began as initial research quickly became a well-timed opportunity. "We thought it would be a two-to-five-year horizon, not eight months," Greg recalls. "But when the right residence became available, and everything fell into place with selling our house, we knew our move was meant to be."
The right fit
The couple toured other area communities, but Tallgrass Creek stood out. "For our values, other places didn't measure up or have the same feel," Greg says. "The ambiance, the appearance, the people--especially the staff--made a positive connection with us right away."
They returned to Tallgrass Creek three times in six weeks to explore floor plans, amenities, and the community's culture. "The choices of floor plans were a big draw," says Deede. "We've built a few homes together over our 53 years of marriage, so we had a good idea of what we wanted, and the options here were amazing."
They ultimately chose a home in the Prairie View residence building because it features a light-filled layout and a wraparound balcony that quickly became a favorite retreat. "We spend so much time outdoors--morning coffee, happy hour in the evening, and reading in the afternoon," says Greg.
Seamless transition
The Harrises credit the Tallgrass Creek team for a smooth transition. From recommending trusted real estate agents and estate sale companies to creating a detailed floor plan to guide their downsizing, the staff provided clear guidance at every step.
"The furniture we brought--a mix of heirlooms and things I've built--fits perfectly and makes it feel like home," Greg notes.
Even a last-minute change of plans did not disrupt the process. "We thought we might hold an estate sale but ended up doing a moving/garage sale instead. Luckily, we had great weather for all three days," Greg says.
Once moved in, Resident Services Coordinator Connie Mason ensured the couple had everything they needed. "There was a learning curve, but that's to be expected," Greg says.
Now fully settled, Greg and Deede are discovering the many ways Tallgrass Creek helps residents stay active and connected. Greg joined the woodshop, while Deede sings in the choir and plays cards on Fridays. Together, they enjoy the campus walking trails.
"There's so much to do here you can't do it all," says Deede. "We enjoy meeting people, inviting others to join us for dinner, and still having the option to relax on our own."
Financial peace of mind
For Greg, understanding the community's financial model was an essential part of the decision-making process."I'm a detail person, so I wanted to fully understand the costs. Information was very forthcoming, and I appreciated that. The predictable monthly service package covers utilities, maintenance, and meals. We still have a full kitchen but have the option to eat in restaurants on site," he says.
He adds, "The core reason we're here is the long-term care and knowing we won't have to move again. It's peace of mind for us and for our daughters."
That reassurance became even more meaningful when the couple considered the responsibilities of home maintenance they sought to leave behind.
"Here, those things just aren't our responsibility anymore," Greg says. "It gives us more time to enjoy life."
That freedom, combined with the friendly atmosphere, reinforces the couple's belief that they made the right move at the right time. They encourage anyone considering a move to take the time to visit, tour the campus, and talk with residents. "Think seriously about what you want your future to look like," says Greg.
For the Harrises, the answer was clear. "Tallgrass Creek is our home, and to be comfortable here in our residence and in the larger community is a blessing," says Deede. "We're living our best retirement life."
