1. Free Neighborhood Clean-Up Set for Aug. 22 in Northeast Wichita (communityvoiceks.com) — Northeast Wichita residents between 13th and 17th, Grove and Hillside can set out bulky trash, tires, and tree debris for free pickup during a neighborhood clean-up on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to noon. Just have everything separated and at the curb by 7 a.m., and remember hazardous waste must go to the city's Stillwell facility.
2. Headlines for August 19, 2026 (kmuw.org) — Wichita leaders have approved a 2035 Downtown Wichita Action Plan that pushes for more family housing, better transit, riverfront amenities, and a possible new performing arts and convention complex near Century II. Local teachers are weighing a tentative contract that offers a 1.5% raise and more planning time, while state transportation funds will repair K-15 in Wichita amid a broader Kansas road package.
3. 20-year-old motorcyclist killed in west Wichita car crash (kansas.com) — A 20-year-old Wichita motorcyclist, Bradan Salsberry, has died from injuries suffered in a crash at Maple and Tyler in west Wichita, and a fundraiser has shifted from medical to funeral expenses. Police say a 27-year-old driver turned left in front of him and was arrested on suspicion of DUI-related aggravated battery. Friends are planning a Sept. 1 memorial ride in his hometown of Anthony.
4. Sedgwick County budget discussion revives questions on Northwest Expressway (kwch.com) — Sedgwick County leaders are again debating the long-discussed Northwest Expressway, a proposed route that would connect Maize and Goddard while bypassing Wichita. With no funding set aside in next year's budget and a long-delayed KDOT feasibility study, commissioners are questioning decades of spending on land acquisition and pressing state leaders on whether the project will ever move forward.
