Wichita-area students named semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship contest (kmuw.org) — Wichita-area high schoolers, including students from several Wichita public and private schools, have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, putting them in the running for $2,500 awards next spring. The list includes students from Wichita East, Heights, Northwest, Collegiate, and nearby suburban schools, highlighting strong academic performance across the metro. Finalists will be chosen based on applications, essays, and test scores.
   

2. 9/11 attacks sparked Kansas man's decision to join Marines, now aiding Wichita amputees (foxkansas.com) — A Wichita-based Marine veteran is now using his own experience with war injuries to help local amputees regain mobility through prosthetics. After enlisting following the 9/11 attacks and serving in Iraq, he returned to Kansas and now supports others in Wichita facing life after limb loss.
   

3. Local nonprofit hosts fundraiser to support mission of giving back to women (kwch.com) — Women in Wichita looking for support and community can connect with Cricket Alley Ministries, which just held a fashion-focused fundraiser and is planning a color analysis event on Sept. 24. The nonprofit helps women in need feel confident with clothing, raffles, and style guidance, and signups for the next event are available on its Facebook page.
   

4. Heritage Classic opens with competitive first round (ksn.com) — Golf fans in Wichita can follow the Heritage Classic underway at Rolling Hills Country Club, birthplace of the LPGA, where several former Wichita State Shockers are in the mix after round one. Local standouts like Kate Tilma and Rachel Stous are within striking distance heading into the cut after the second round.
   

5. More than $39,000 awarded to literacy resources across Kansas (ksn.com) — Wichita readers should know the Kansas Humane Society in town is receiving $3,600 from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support youth literacy efforts. It's one of several Kansas groups sharing more than $39,000 in grants for books, technology, and educational materials that help K-12 students across the state.
