Today's riddle: What do you call somebody who crosses the ocean twice and doesn't take a bath? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Community protesting clean-out of homeless encampment at Chapin Park (kwch.com) — Wichita officials plan to clear and raze the large homeless encampment at Chapin Park starting Oct. 13, giving remaining residents just two days to leave. Advocates are urging the city to allow three encampments to stay through March, citing difficulties finding pet‑friendly housing despite vouchers and ongoing coordination with animal welfare groups.
2. Community shares thoughts on Wichita school bond issue, district provides answers (kwch.com) — Wichita voters are being asked to approve a $615 million Wichita Public Schools bond this November, split into two ballot questions that would fund school consolidations and major building upgrades without raising the current tax rate on the first question. Residents at a Saturday meeting voiced concerns about school closures, busing students farther from home, and feeling left out of planning, while district leaders cited aging facilities and declining enrollment.
3. Firefighter injured, another in critical condition in Wichita house fire (kwch.com) — A Saturday night house fire in southwest Wichita left one person in extremely critical condition and another, a firefighter, seriously hurt after crews responded to heavy smoke and flames in the 3100 block of South Mt. Carmel. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the blaze, and authorities say details on the victims' injuries may change as more information becomes available.
4. Milani, first known giraffe C-section survivor, joins Tanganyika herd (ksn.com) — Milani, a giraffe calf born prematurely by C-section at Tanganyika Wildlife Park near Wichita, has now joined the park's main herd after months of intensive care. Park staff describe her survival as groundbreaking for giraffe medicine, crediting donated plasma and meticulous support for helping her grow to over six feet tall and more than 200 pounds.
5. 'She's still with us': Loved ones gather to mourn, remember Wichita shooting victim (kansas.com) — Friends and family in west Wichita gathered at the apartment complex near Tyler and Maple where 22-year-old Aaliyah Wilson was fatally shot, holding a vigil filled with balloons, flowers, and memories of her life. Speakers honored her personality, decried domestic violence, and noted that police have arrested her boyfriend, while Wichita authorities urged anyone facing abuse to seek help through 911 or local crisis centers.
