LOUISVILLE, KY — The Kentucky Derby may be the most famous horse race in the world, but the outfits worn by attendees have made it an annual runway for bold and daring fashion. Specifically, hats and fascinators have become the defining accessory for racegoers to express their authentic style.

The tradition of wearing hats began in 1875 with the first running of the Kentucky Oaks horse race. From feathers and fresh flowers to pastels and floral patterns, men and women alike tend to adopt a "go big or go home" mentality when it comes to their fashion. Every year since 2018 there's even been an official milliner, or hatmaker, appointed. However, due to their growing importance, there were three chosen this year: Christine Moore, Jenny Pfanenstiel and The Hat Girls.
