Dr. Moyer emphasized that layered protections continue to be our path out of the pandemic.
“Getting vaccinated is one of the best, most protective layers. But just recently three studies came out that showed how effective a layer of mask-wearing is for schools. Schools without mask requirements were 3.5 times more likely to have COVID outbreaks compared with schools that started the year with mask requirements. So please continue wearing all the layers of protection to reduce your risk of getting sick with COVID.”
In addition to mask-wearing and vaccination, other layers of protection to help prevent COVID-19 are hand washing, good ventilation, staying home when you’re sick, avoid touching your face, getting tested regularly and distancing from others when you don’t know their vaccination status.

Dr. Hartlage reviewed the CDC’s recommendation for Pfizer booster doses for those who have completed their two-dose series at least six months ago. People who are eligible are:
· 65 years and older
· 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
· 18+ who work in high-risk settings
· 18+ who live in high-risk settings
Individuals fall into those groups should discuss getting a booster dose with their healthcare provider. Vaccination locations can be found at vaccines.gov.
“Getting a booster dose is important, but the highest priority, and what will help our community the most, is having as many people possible get their first doses so that we blanket the whole community with that antibody resistance and immunity,” Dr. Hartlage said
Dr. Hartlage also reported that the Department of Public Health and Wellness has added two additional vaccination sites in partnership with the Kentucky Nurses Association:

“Throughout the community, we’re seeing unvaccinated people getting seriously ill, missing work, missing school. They’re ending up in the hospital, which can be scary and uncomfortable — not to mention costly. And, sadly, some aren’t ever making it home,” said Mayor Fischer. “That’s the tragedy we can prevent by each person getting vaccinated. Remember that vaccines are safe — the Pfizer vaccine having passed the FDA’s most rigorous standards in the world — and highly effective at preventing serious illness. They’re free and available at over 100 locations in our community. Please schedule your vaccine today. Call the Lou Health Helpline, 502-912-8598, if you need help finding a location and making an appointment.”
