The Mayor noted that it’s a great honor to host the inaugural Women’s Cup in Louisville and it has the capacity to grow the city’s goal to be the epicenter of women’s soccer, but “as a compassionate and welcoming city, we must recognize the devastating scenes unfolding in Afghanistan, especially the humanitarian crisis facing Afghan women and girls.”
“We recognize that quick action is needed to support those on the frontlines helping Afghan women, as well as our local refugee-serving organizations,” said the Mayor.
“On behalf of The Women’s Cup, we would like to pledge our full support for the plight of the women in Afghanistan,” said JP Reynal, Director, The Women’s Cup. “We stand for the rights of women on and off the field.”
To amplify the fundraising, The Women’s Cup, in partnership the Mayor, NWSL, Racing Louisville and Gloria Football announced it is launching a Go Fund Me page as a central global point for donations in support of humanitarian relief efforts. Funds raised through the page will be sent to local resettlement agencies Catholic Charities and Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM), and UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and empowerment of women.
“This cup was founded with the intention to celebrate women and gender equality and I believe that so far it’s been clear that The Women’s Cup has set a new standard for female footballers. Their rights have been celebrated these past few days and have shown the world we are ready for more,” said Victoire Cogevina, CEO and co-founder of Gloria, and UN Ambassador for Gender Equality. “It’s now our turn to use women’s football and this platform for healing. I’m very proud and humbled to be a part of this effort, and to have witnessed people’s enormous generosity and kindness. It’s after all what brought us all together in the first place.”
Of the first $40,000 raised, $20,000 will be split between Catholic Charities and KRM and $20,000 will go to UN Women.
Louisville is home to 80-plus Afghan families. Catholic Charities and Kentucky Refugee Ministries are leaders in Louisville’s refugee resettlement work and help connect refugees to housing, jobs, food, services and community.
“We so appreciate the show of support this gift represents. Catholic Charities has been resettling refugees here in Louisville since we first began responding to the South Asian refugee crisis after Vietnam. Our city has stepped up to the challenge for decades now, and we will continue to do so today in whatever ways we can,” said Lisa De Jaco Crutcher, CEO and Executive Director, Catholic Charities of Louisville.
“Conditions in Afghanistan are deeply demoralizing to witness,” said John Koehlinger, Executive Director, Kentucky Refugee Ministries. “Providing protection and refuge to those Afghans who credibly fear for their lives affirms the United States’ support for freedom and human rights for all people.”
This is the first of a five-year commitment with The Women’s Cup.
The link for the GoFundMe page will be released later today. Watch social media accounts @thewomenscup and @louisvillemayor for updates.
