Following a vote by Metro Council on Thursday night, the target date to reopen the full Cherokee Scenic Loop to automobiles is set for Labor Day, Monday, September 6.

“I want to thank Louisville Parks and Recreation for working to ensure the Cherokee Park Scenic Loop is clearly marked and safe for pedestrians and bikes as all sections of the loop open back up for automobile traffic,” said Council President David James (D-6).

“Following Thursday night’s council vote to fully reopen the Cherokee Park Scenic Loop to vehicular traffic, Louisville Parks and Recreation is working to meet an agreed upon Sept. 6 deadline to switch the pattern back to what it was prior to the COVID-19 pandemic closure. This will require a great deal of coordination. Road striping as well as signage and barricade removal must take place. We will complete these tasks quickly and appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to safely reopen. We want ensure the public has plenty of notice to alleviate as much confusion as possible,” said Parks and Recreation Director Dana Kasler.

President James said Louisville Parks and Recreation employees will spend this week removing all of the marking on the roadway of the Cherokee Loop so that it will return to pre-COVID 19 status with one lane for traffic going one way and one lane for walkers, runners and pedestrians.

The work will also depend on weather conditions, specifically heavy rain due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida passing through the area mid-week, Kasler said, as well as the availability of supplies such as roadway paint.
