The first one goes out to Solid Waste Management Enforcement Officers as they continue their efforts to catch those who illegally dump in neighborhoods. The second, to an alert landowner who snapped photos of the dumping while it was taking place.

“I appreciate anyone who wants to help us keep our neighborhoods safe and clean and I can’t stress enough how proud I am of the people of District 5 who are working with me to help clean up our community,” said Purvis. “Our officers are also doing a great job and when they get help from citizens, we all benefit.”

The latest impounded occurred after a citizen was checking on a property that he owns in District 5. According to SWMS Officers, he witnessed an individual dump material in an alley. He didn’t confront the illegal dumper but instead took photos and contacted his local Codes and Regulations officer who then contacted LMPD and Public Works Solid Waste Enforcement officers.

When confronted by SWMS Enforcement, the individual admitted to hauling debris for someone, but instead of properly disposing the junk, he dumped it in the alley.

SWMS officers issued a citation with a $500 fine plus $250 cleanup fee and ordered the vehicle to be impounded. The illegal dumper must pay an additional $250 to retrieve the vehicle or it will be held for twelve (12) months.

According to SWMS, this case highlights a problem in our community. When you use an unlicensed waste hauler, the hauler often keeps the cash and dumps the items illegally. Be careful – even if you have good intentions, you could be cited and fined along with the illegal dumper. It is your responsibility to ensure your waste is disposed of at a permitted disposal facility or transferred to a licensed waste hauler.

“Don’t contribute to the problem, make sure your waste is disposed of legally,” says Councilwoman Purvis.
