Today's riddle: Why was the scarecrow given an award? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Hurwitz Mintz to close after over a century in Metairie (wwltv.com) — Metairie shoppers are losing a century-old staple as Hurwitz Mintz prepares to close after 102 years, offering 60% to 70% off as it liquidates inventory. The furniture store hasn't said why it's shutting down or exactly when doors will close, but all sales are final and special orders, returns, and exchanges are no longer available.
2. Man found atop Metairie tree fled from deputies hours earlier after motorcycle crash, JPSO says (nola.com) — A man who climbed a tree near the I-10 Clearview Parkway exit in Metairie during rush hour was later identified as a suspect who allegedly fled a motorcycle traffic stop hours earlier, according to deputies. The incident drew a large response from Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, State Police, and firefighters, who negotiated for about two hours before he climbed down and was arrested.
3. 2027 Benefit Changes & Resources (tulane.edu) — Metairie residents who use Tulane's health plans can save on medical costs by choosing LCMC facilities like East Jefferson General and Lakeside Hospital, which offer lower deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. The 2027 benefits update also adds an eMed weight-management program using GLP-1 medications and clarifies new Roth catch-up rules for higher-earning employees preparing for open enrollment later this month.
4. Pair of New Orleans airport baggage handlers accused of stealing $79K watch from luggage (nola.com) — A Metairie teenager working as a baggage handler at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is accused, along with a LaPlace coworker, of stealing a luxury watch worth over $79,000 from a traveler's checked luggage. Jefferson Parish deputies say security footage led to their arrests on felony theft charges, and both were released from the Gretna jail after posting bond.
5. Saints rule out LB Kaden Elliss, pass rusher Carl Granderson (newsbreak.com) — Saints fans in Metairie will want to know the team will be missing linebacker Kaden Elliss and pass rusher Carl Granderson for Monday night's game against the Falcons, with Pete Werner still questionable. Tight end Noah Fant is also questionable, and coaches say Werner's status could come down to a game-time decision after he missed practice all week.
