Nicholls State and Sodexo Ease Finals Week Stress with Campus Meal Giveaway

THIBODAUX, LA — As finals week brought long hours of studying and added stress to campus, Sodexo and The Colonel Closet at Nicholls State University came together once again to help students facing food insecurity through the university’s Hunger Free Campus efforts.

This spring, the teams hosted a special meal giveaway for students, providing 300 free plates of jambalaya, corn, green beans, and bread rolls. All 300 meals were claimed within approximately two hours, underscoring both the need for accessible food resources on campus and how meaningful the event was for students during one of the busiest times of the semester.

The event provided students with support and relief during finals week, giving many one less thing to worry about while preparing for exams. Along with providing food, the gathering created a sense of comfort and connection at a time when stress levels were high across campus.

“It was like a little taste of home during finals,” said student Shewit Bonommi. “Between studying and exams, having a meal provided to us was incredibly helpful. Small acts like this really make us feel appreciated and cared for.”

The spring event followed efforts launched last fall as Sodexo expanded its support of the university’s Hunger Free Campus work. The Sodexo team joined the Nicholls State University Hunger Free Task Force and worked alongside campus and community organizations to connect students with essential resources. Sodexo also assisted with Hunger Free Campus graphics for The Colonel Closet and partnered during Hunger Action Month on the Cooking for a Cause event, which supported Tillou’s Table through Sodexo’s Swipe Out Hunger Program.

With continued campus support and strong student participation, these efforts are helping build a stronger network of care for students throughout the academic year, especially during high-pressure periods like finals week.
