📰 News we're reading

1. UMC New Orleans expands cancer center, bringing advanced care closer to home (wwltv.com) — An expanded cancer center at UMC New Orleans is now open, doubling exam rooms and infusion chairs so more patients can access advanced treatments and clinical trials. Backed by a federal grant and LSU/Tulane specialists, the center aims to serve cancer patients from across Louisiana regardless of insurance status. Local leaders say it moves New Orleans closer to elite national cancer-center designation.

2. 'Eternally grateful': Community uplifts woman who lost pet, home in Uptown fire (wwltv.com) — An Uptown New Orleans woman displaced by last week's Napoleon Avenue apartment fire is rebuilding her life with help from friends, krewes, and neighbors after losing her home and one of her cats. She's already searching for new housing, salvaging keepsakes, and working to ensure fellow tenants also get support, saying the city's people and their generosity are what keep her hopeful.

3. New Orleans prepares for National Guard departure after deployment marked by controversy (wwltv.com) — National Guard troops are beginning to leave New Orleans this week as the eight‑month Operation NOLA Safe winds down, shifting visible security duties back to NOPD and State Police. Officials say crime has been falling but debate how much credit the Guard deserves. The withdrawal has also sparked political sparring between Mayor Helena Moreno, Governor Jeff Landry, and other state leaders.

4. Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office to use AI to monitor jail calls, social media (fox8live.com) — The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office in New Orleans is rolling out an AI system from Bancroft Global to monitor jail calls, social media, and video in hopes of preventing escapes and reducing assaults. Sheriff Michelle Woodfork says the $30,000, six‑month contract should help uncover criminal networks and corrupt deputies in the chronically understaffed jail, while watchdogs call it a valuable force multiplier.
