1. New Orleans OIG report finds weak oversight of NORD booster clubs (nola.com) — New Orleans' recreation department, NORD, is under scrutiny after the city's inspector general found weak oversight of booster clubs and inconsistent collection of youth sports fees, costing an estimated $150,000 a year. The report highlights confusion over how many active clubs exist, uneven fees charged to families, and missing deposits, and urges better staff training, electronic payments, and clearer rules to strengthen playground programs across the city.
2. Auditor: Higher property taxes could offset some New Orleans budget cuts (fox8live.com) — New Orleans leaders are weighing a 2027 budget with $77 million in cuts and a possible citywide property tax increase that could add about $200 a year to a $300,000 home. Police, fire, health services, courts, and even Mardi Gras cleanup could feel the squeeze unless a proposed millage roll forward, to be discussed at an Oct. 29 hearing, helps close the city's $220 million deficit.
3. New Orleans budget proposal could close city-run homeless shelter (wdsu.com) — New Orleans' proposed 2027 budget would cut $5 million from the city's low-barrier homeless shelter at the former VA hospital, potentially forcing its closure and putting about 200 people back on the streets. City officials cite stalled state funding while housing advocates warn the loss would be devastating, even as the budget adds money for other housing and homeless programs and calls for more resilient systems and support services.
4. This & That…Wednesday, September 23, 2026 (redriverparishjournal.com) — New Orleans football fans can head to the Caesars Superdome this Sunday for the Saints' home opener against the Raiders, featuring a halftime show headlined by DJ Diesel, also known as Shaquille O'Neal. The roundup also notes upcoming Louisiana college events, national sports milestones, and a developing dispute over White House TV press access.
