Opioid funds will build new counseling center for the public in St. Landry Parish (wgno.com) — Opelousas-area residents could soon have a new publicly accessible counseling center funded by opioid settlement money, serving both jail inmates and community members. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says roughly 70% of St. Landry Parish inmates struggle with opioid addiction and is now searching for Opelousas-area property to build a dedicated recovery facility to meet growing requests for help.
3. Fatal Motorcycle Crash Reported in Iberia Parish (news-usa.today) — A 45-year-old Opelousas man was killed early Saturday when his Harley-Davidson left Louisiana Highway 3212 in Iberia Parish and struck a concrete curb, according to state police. Investigators are still determining what caused the crash and are awaiting toxicology results, while troopers use the tragedy to urge safer driving and promote motorcycle safety training.
4. Melville Mayor arrested for failing to appear in court (kalb.com) — A court in Opelousas ordered the arrest of Melville Mayor Caretta Robertson after she allegedly failed to appear with town financial records in a long-running civil debt case. The dispute, tied to a former police chief candidate's old judgment, has now left Melville responsible for the remaining debt plus substantial interest and attorney fees.
5. United Way Receives Dolly Parton Funding (stlandrynow.com) — St. Landry–Evangeline United Way in Opelousas has received a $5,000 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant to expand Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for local children. The funding will help put more free books into homes across St. Landry and Evangeline parishes, aiming to reach every eligible child and strengthen early reading skills in the community.
