By Danica Lamontagne
Mayor Liam LaFountain and the Biddeford City Council are pleased to announce Laurie Smith as their choice for Biddeford's next city manager.
The council will vote to confirm a three-year agreement with Smith at their meeting on November 5.
"I'm pleased to nominate Laurie Smith to serve as Biddeford's next city manager," said LaFountain. "Her extensive municipal experience, financial acumen, and management skills will be valuable as we strengthen City operations and plan for Biddeford's future. I look forward to working with Laurie, our staff, and the City Council to address the challenges ahead and better serve our residents."
Smith currently serves as Kennebunkport manager, a position she has held for the last twelve years.
She previously worked as assistant city manager, manager, finance director, and community relations manager in her 10-year career for Auburn
She has also managed Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, Oxford and Boothbay.
Smith has a B.A. in Public Administration from the University of Maine Orono and lives in Kennebunk, Maine, from which she doesn't plan to move to Biddeford despite a charter mandate requiring it.
"I'm honored to be joining Biddeford," Smith said. "Throughout this process, I've been impressed by how deeply people care about this city and its future. I look forward to getting to know the community, supporting our dedicated employees, and working with the mayor and council to turn shared priorities into meaningful progress."
Upon confirmation of her appointment, Smith will start December 29.
