1. Augusta Schools propose closing Hussey Elementary, expanding Farrington (wmtw.com) — Augusta families could see major school changes as a proposal heads to voters to close Lillian Hussey School and significantly expand Farrington Elementary, including universal pre-K, 19 classrooms, and a STEM space. Superintendent Mike Tracy says the $53.5 million project would be fully state-funded, with no direct construction cost to Augusta taxpayers if approved.
2. UMaine, Thomas College announce scholarships for Alfond Grant recipients (pressherald.com) — New scholarships tied to the Alfond Grant are now available to students who choose the University of Maine at Augusta or other University of Maine campuses, plus Thomas College. Announced at UMA's Randall Student Center, the program adds hundreds of dollars in aid on top of existing Alfond savings, aiming to make post-secondary education more attainable for Maine-born students.
3. UMaine Augusta to host 45 Maine employers at job fair (mainebiz.biz) — If you're in Augusta and job hunting, the University of Maine at Augusta is hosting a free job fair today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Randall Student Center. More than 45 employers, many offering full-time, part-time, and fair-chance opportunities, will be meeting with students, alumni, and community members.
4. Maine corrections officer indicted for sexual assault (wmtw.com) — An Augusta resident working as a Kennebec County corrections officer has been indicted on charges of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact involving an inmate. Investigators say video and witness accounts showed the pair entering a camera-free room, and the officer has since been arrested, released on bail, and terminated from his county position.
5. Public Comment Period Opens October 7 for Maine Library Commission Draft Rule (maine.gov) — State library officials in Augusta are opening a 45-day public comment period starting today on a draft rule for the Maine Regional Library System. Residents can weigh in online, by email, mail to the Augusta State House address, or by attending an October 27 hearing at the Deering Building on the former AMHI campus.
