Jury Duty Scam in Augusta Area, Police Warn
Augusta police: scam going around involving a caller telling a victim he/she missed jury duty and must pay to avoid jail.
AUGUSTA, ME β Augusta police this week issued a warning for a scam going around the county involving a caller telling a victim he/she missed jury duty and must pay to avoid jail. There have been several reports of this scam across Kennebec County, police said.
The caller poses as an official with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department and tells the victim there's a warrant out for his/her arrest for missing jury duty. The caller then instructs the victim to purchase a pre-paid card and send it in to avoid jail.
"Never give out personal info over the phone and report all suspicious calls such as this," Augusta police said in a statement.
