Maine-Built USS Zumwalt Breaks Down in Panama Canal

The $4 billion USS Zumwalt — the Navy's most expensive ship ever — was built at Bath Iron Works in Maine.

The Maine-built USS Zumwalt — the Navy's largest and most expensive ship ever — broke down Monday in the Panama Canal on its journey to California. The $4 billion destroyer suffered an engineering issue that caused water to leak in the ship, according to USNI News. The ship was towed to a nearby naval station for repairs that are expected to take up to ten days, Navy spokesman spokesman Cmdr. Ryan Perry told USNI.

The Zumwalt was built at Bath Iron Works in Maine. At 600 feet, it's the Navy’s largest destroyer. Its angular design is designed to throw off radar. The ship has a powerful railgun that has been described as “Star Wars technology.”
