📰 News we're reading

• Portland seeking input on middle school reorganization (pressherald.com) — Portland Public Schools is asking residents this week to weigh in on a major reorganization of the city’s three middle schools, including Lincoln, King, and Lyman Moore. With enrollment down and costly repairs looming at Lincoln, the district is hosting virtual and in-person sessions as it develops a redesign plan due to the school board in October.

• Unitil wants rate increase for southern Maine natural gas customers (wmtw.com) — Portland natural gas customers could see their monthly bills rise by about $11 if Unitil’s proposed rate increase is approved for southern Maine. The Maine Public Utilities Commission will review the filing, which targets customers in Greater Portland and several nearby cities, with new rates potentially taking effect in mid-2027.

• Portland City Council approves next year's $364M budget (pressherald.com) — Portland’s City Council has approved a $364 million fiscal 2027 budget that raises the property tax rate by 59 cents while expanding paid parking hours and fees downtown. Councilors also added $500,000 for the family shelter, trimmed a police tech contract, and debated but ultimately rejected a larger funding boost for the Portland Public Library.
