📰 News we're reading

1. Portland nears final stretch on downtown intersection revamp (mainebiz.biz) — Construction at Portland's busy Congress Square intersection is entering its final phase, with completion now expected by the end of October. Drivers and pedestrians will see shifting lane patterns and reroutes as crews finish signal, sidewalk, and lighting upgrades, and anyone with special access needs is urged to contact the city to plan ahead.

2. Portland seeks feedback on long-awaited plan for overhauling Franklin Street (pressherald.com) — Portland is asking residents to weigh in on a major redesign of Franklin Street that would narrow lanes, add bike and pedestrian improvements, and unlock land for hundreds of new homes. You can review the draft plan online through Sept. 25 and attend a public presentation at the Portland Public Library, before the proposal heads to city committees and the council this fall.

3. Fidium Fiber outage affects customers in Maine and across New England (wmtw.com) — An internet outage from Fidium Fiber briefly knocked service offline across New England, including for customers and organizations in Portland. Service began coming back within about 40 minutes, but local groups like the Portland Conservatory of Music temporarily lost internet and phone access while crews worked to stabilize the network.

4. Maine Democrats slam Collins in Portland over vote blocking Epstein files release (wgme.com) — Maine Democrats gathered in Portland to criticize Sen. Susan Collins for voting with Republicans to block release of the Epstein files, arguing the decision harms Maine women. Speakers tied the vote to her past support for Supreme Court nominees they view as anti-abortion. Collins' campaign did not respond to a request for comment, leaving Portland residents with only one side's framing of the dispute.
