Juvenile victim in fatal Portland crash identified as Scarborough student (pressherald.com) — A 13-year-old Scarborough student was killed and two teens seriously injured when a group walking along Warren Avenue in Portland was struck by a vehicle Saturday night, adding to a troubling rise in local pedestrian deaths. Portland and Scarborough schools are offering counseling, while city officials and advocates renew calls for urgent Vision Zero safety upgrades on dangerous corridors like Warren Avenue.
3. Portland schools cut costs after overspending 2026 FY budget by nearly $1 million (wgme.com) — Portland Public Schools overspent last year's budget by about $934,000, and district leaders now plan hiring freezes, position cuts, and department trims to close the gap. The school board will vote September 22 on retroactively approving the overage before it goes to the Portland City Council, with several board members warning classrooms and student services may feel the impact.

Fast-growing Scarborough to get additional transit service (mainebiz.biz) — Scarborough residents will soon be able to book on‑demand microtransit rides that connect into Greater Portland Metro's fixed routes, part of a broader plan to add new bus service between Portland, South Portland, and Scarborough. Backed by Maine Turnpike Authority funding, the project aims to ease turnpike congestion, improve access to jobs and services, and could expand zones after Metro reviews ridership and performance.
5. Brunswick man accused of killing neighbor appears in court (pressherald.com) — A Brunswick man accused of fatally shooting his neighbor appeared in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland, where a judge read murder and explosives charges and appointed him an attorney. He is being held without bail as investigators continue probing the September 1 killing at Bay Bridge Estates, the second recent Brunswick homicide allegedly involving neighbors.
