1. Portland's First Parish Church celebrating 200 years (wmtw.com) — First Parish's historic meetinghouse on Congress Street is marking its 200th anniversary with a full week of public events in downtown Portland, starting Sept. 20. You can join tours, historian panels, a benefit concert, a drag performance at the State Theatre, special services, and a Sept. 27 ice cream social and time-capsule presentation.
2. Portland all-gender Scouts' edgy signs are only part of their appeal (pressherald.com) — Portland families curious about Scouts can check out Troop 1, an all-gender, youth-led unit that meets weekly at Stevens Avenue Congregational Church and is actively recruiting with edgy lawn signs. The long-running troop now has about 50 members, including transgender and nonbinary youth, and emphasizes outdoor skills, safety, and peer leadership through local meetings and trips.
3. Portland Dog Park and Restaurant 'Woof Play Eat' Permanently Closes, Citing Lengthy City and State Delays (wgan.com) — A Portland favorite for dog owners, Woof Play Eat, has permanently closed after months of costly regulatory delays and inspections from the city and state drained its startup capital. Owners Brad and Marissa Sterl say the extended pre-opening period, added construction costs, and unsuccessful attempts to secure new funding made the hybrid dog park and restaurant impossible to keep afloat.
4. Tri for a Cure named Maine's most popular triathlon (wmtw.com) — Just across the bridge in South Portland, the women's-only Tri for a Cure has been named Maine's top triathlon by Triathlete magazine. Drawing over 1,200 participants and raising more than $28 million since 2008, the race funds Maine Cancer Foundation programs that support cancer prevention, early detection, and patient care across communities including greater Portland.
5. Honor Flight Maine sends nearly 80 veterans to Washington, DC for weekend of remembrance (newscentermaine.com) — Portland-area residents may spot nearly 80 Maine veterans flying out of the Portland International Jetport this weekend as they head to Washington, D.C. with Honor Flight Maine. The three-day trip includes visits to major war memorials, a wreath-laying at Arlington, and a special screening of a new Vietnam-focused documentary featuring actor Gary Sinise.
