1. New Stroudwater Bridge opens in Portland (wmtw.com) — Portland just opened the new Stroudwater pedestrian bridge, creating an accessible link that will eventually connect the Stroudwater River Trail with the Fore River Sanctuary. City staff and Portland Trails say the project will support off-street walking and biking between Outer Congress Street, Brighton Avenue, and Rock Row, with several miles of new and improved trails underway this year.
2. 'Bring it to people:' Foodies celebrate annual Maine Poutine fest (fox23maine.com) — Food lovers packed Thompson's Point in Portland for the annual Maine Poutine Fest, sampling creative takes on the classic Quebec dish from restaurants across the region. Attendees voted for their favorites while judges honored newcomer Oh Canada Poutine, as organizers estimated about 1,500 people enjoyed the cheesy, gravy-covered fries in Portland.
3. Walk to Defeat ALS held in Portland with over 300 walkers (wmtw.com) — Hundreds of residents gathered in Portland for the long-running Walk to Defeat ALS, raising money and awareness for research and support services. Local families, volunteers, and people living with ALS shared emotional stories, formed fundraising teams, and encouraged others in Portland to keep advocating, donating, and pushing for quicker diagnoses and better care.
4. Maine officials identify phytoplankton behind Casco Bay bloom (wmtw.com) — State marine officials say a phytoplankton bloom in Casco Bay, confirmed in Portland Harbor, likely caused recent clam deaths but now appears to be past its peak. They're continuing close monitoring, stressing there's no direct threat to human health, though fish and shellfish can still be harmed and local harvesters are receiving guidance.
5. State Agriculture Officials Conclude 2026 Conference with Reflections, Announcements and New Leadership (americanagnetwork.com) — Portland just hosted hundreds of top agriculture officials from across the country for NASDA's 2026 annual meeting, giving Maine a chance to showcase its farming innovations. Leaders announced new USDA funding for meat inspection programs, highlighted national bankruptcy data tools, and elected new NASDA officers, while Maine's agriculture commissioner praised Portland and surrounding communities for their hospitality.
