1. Maine veterans find healing and closure on Honor Flight visit to DC memorials (newscentermaine.com) — Maine veterans returned to a hero's welcome at Portland Jetport after an Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C., where they visited war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. Over the emotional weekend, participants honored fallen friends, found long-delayed closure, and built new bonds, especially among women veterans who plan to keep meeting regularly.
2. Crash on Maine Turnpike in Gray causes more than 10 miles of backups (wmtw.com) — A Friday evening crash on the Maine Turnpike in Gray sent a New Hampshire driver to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries and backed up northbound traffic for more than 10 miles. Police say the man swerved into a guardrail after another SUV abruptly changed lanes, briefly closing one lane while crews responded and evaluated his daughter for minor injuries.
3. One person killed, three injured in head-on crash in Standish (newscentermaine.com) — A head-on collision between a sedan and a flatbed tow truck on Chadbourne Road in Standish killed the sedan's driver and seriously injured three people in the truck, including passenger Luke Boyle of Portland. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says speed appears to be a factor, and the injured were taken to Maine Medical Center as crash reconstruction teams continue investigating.
4. Troy Jackson launches new "Families For Troy" Coalition (wgme.com) — A U.S. Senate campaign stop in Portland brought Democratic candidate Troy Jackson together with local families as he launched his new "Families For Troy" coalition. Jackson emphasized universal school meals and child care affordability, arguing federal tax policy favors the wealthy and could shift more costs onto communities like Portland through higher property taxes.
5. Supreme Court vote shadows Maine Sen. Susan Collins in her first race after abortion rights decision (yourconroenews.com) — Maine's U.S. Senate race is sharpening as some voters, including a Portland woman once swayed by Planned Parenthood's support, reassess Sen. Susan Collins over her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh. Democrat Troy Jackson is courting abortion-rights supporters statewide, but analysts say many Mainers remain more focused on economic concerns than on Roe v. Wade's overturning.
