City of Portland hosts first waterfront summit Tuesday afternoon (wmtw.com) — Portland city officials and waterfront stakeholders are gathering today at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to plan for rising seas and more frequent flooding in parts of downtown. The summit kicks off a longer public process to shape adaptation strategies, share visualizations of potential solutions, and set goals for the next decade along Portland's working waterfront.
2. For the actors at Portland Stage, it's exciting when a play offers a challenge (newscentermaine.com) — Portland theater fans can catch Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" at Portland Stage Company, where actors are digging into its dense, time-hopping script through October 25. Cast members describe the production as intellectually demanding yet rewarding, blending comedy, drama, science, and romance in a single room where past and present constantly echo each other.
3. Transportation of oversize load from Jay to Portland to affect traffic (spectrumlocalnews.com) — Expect slow-moving traffic and rolling closures as a massive steam generator is hauled from Jay to South Portland over several nights, ending Oct. 1. The convoy will use major routes into Greater Portland, and residents are asked not to park overnight along the path so crews can move safely and without obstruction.
4. Portland water-monitoring startup taps into expansion funding (mainebiz.biz subscription) — A Portland-based startup, Bluesonde Technologies, has raised $1.74 million to expand its compact water-monitoring buoy systems, which are already deployed across Maine and other states. Working out of the Roux Institute in Portland, the company plans more hires, wider deployments, and a potential move to a larger Greater Portland facility as demand grows.
5. UNE students turn reproductive health training into public resource for Portland (une.edu) — People in Portland can now quietly pick up free menstrual products at the new Period Pantry inside the Equality Community Center downtown, created by University of New England students. Donation bins at several local businesses help keep it stocked, and organizers hope to expand to more Portland locations and inspire similar efforts statewide.
