Bulldog Pride: 5 Unforgettable Athletes From Portland High School
From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Portland.

Sports run deep in Portland, and Portland High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Bulldog uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Portland High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
Quinton Porter – NFL & CFL Pro Football Player
A three-sport athlete at Portland High School and a National Honor Society student, Quinton Porter earned all-state and all-conference honors his senior year while throwing for 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns. He played college football at Boston College, where he was the starting quarterback in 2003 and again in 2005 before Matt Ryan took over. Porter signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and also spent time on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. He later enjoyed several productive seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, even leading the CFL in rushing touchdowns in 2011. Samantha Moore – Dominant Distance Runner & UConn recruit
Samantha Moore leaves Portland High School as one of Maine’s most decorated runners. The 12-time state champion won consecutive Class A cross country titles in 2023 and 2024, claimed multiple regional titles, and competed at New Englands all four years. A leader on the indoor and outdoor track teams as well, Moore overcame a spring foot injury to win another state championship as a senior. Wyatt Allen – Two-Time Olympic Medalist & Rowing Coach
After graduating from Portland High School, Wyatt Allen rowed for the University of Virginia and went on to an international rowing career that included a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics and a bronze in 2008. He also won the prestigious Diamond Challenge Sculls at the 2004 Henley Royal Regatta. Allen is now the head coach of men’s heavyweight rowing at Dartmouth College. Sadie Armstrong – Powerhouse Pitcher & Slugger
Sadie Armstrong shattered records at Portland High, becoming the school's all-time home run leader while dominating as a pitcher. A two-time all-state selection and four-time team MVP, she finished her senior season hitting .593 with 173 strikeouts in the circle. Now playing Division I softball at Longwood University, she continues to stand out on and off the field. Armstrong is also an academic achiever and community advocate, raising over $2,000 for women’s sports scholarships and mentoring young athletes. (Source: MiLB Portland, Longwood Lancers)

Cordell Jones – Gatorade Player of the Year & Portland High Football Standout
Portland’s Cordell Jones electrified the state with his scoring prowess, tying the school’s career touchdown record and closing in on the all-time points mark. A dual-threat quarterback who also starred at receiver and on special teams, Jones helped lead the Bulldogs to their first state title since 2002 and was named the 2024 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year. With offers from 13 Division I schools, Jones chose to stay home and play for the University of Maine. (Source: Portland Press Herald, Gatorade Player of the Year)
