Seven Brann & Isaacson Lawyers Receive National Honors

LEWISTON, Maine (August 20, 2020) – Lewiston-based law firm Brann & Isaacson announced that seven of its lawyers have been named to The Best Lawyers in America© 2021 list. The prestigious list, which was first published in 1983, is compiled based on extensive peer-review evaluations from industry-leading lawyers.

The selections spanned a range of practice areas, including trusts and estates, real estate, employment, tax and corporate law. They also included a variety of litigation specialties, such as labor and employment, commercial, patent and intellectual property.

The firm is recognized as the foremost expert on e-commerce, having represented Wayfair, Overstock, and Newegg in the U.S. Supreme Court case South Dakota v. Wayfair in 2018. Several of the firm’s lawyers are admitted to practice in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, and the firm has represented clients in state and federal courts in over half the states in the country and in most of the federal courts of appeal.

Each Brann & Isaacson lawyer selected has appeared on the list before, and all but one have made the list for at least nine years in a row. The longest consecutive selections are George Isaacson and Martin Eisenstein, who have appeared for 17 and 15 consecutive years, respectively. Additionally, two attorneys – Jamie Szal and Eamonn Hart – appeared on the “Ones to Watch” list.

LAWYERS SELECTED

Peter J. Brann
Peter handles complex corporate and intellectual property litigation. He has litigated patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, and corporate cases in state and federal court in 19 states and before federal agencies. He has represented over a dozen of the 100 largest Internet retailers and has tried to jury verdict as lead counsel several multi-million dollar corporate and intellectual property cases.

Martin I. Eisenstein
Martin’s current area of concentration is advice and counsel to, and litigation on behalf of, internet/direct marketers and IT service providers in connection with state and local tax and unclaimed property matters. Martin was co-counsel for Wayfair, Overstock, and Newegg throughout the proceedings that led to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair.

Martha ("Meg") E. Greene
Meg practices estate planning, charitable giving and estate and trust administration. Her representation includes the preparation of wills and trusts and the related specialties of planning for disabled/incapacitated family members, asset protection, life insurance, retirement and family real estate planning. She also specializes in litigation in these areas.

George S. Isaacson
George represents multi-channel marketers and electronic merchants throughout the United States in connection with state sales, use and income tax matters, as well as regulatory issues. He has represented the Data & Marketing Association (DMA v. Brohl) and Wayfair, Overstock, and Newegg (South Dakota v. Wayfair) in the U.S. Supreme Court and has appeared in federal and state courts throughout the country on behalf of catalog companies and electronic merchants.

Peter D. Lowe
Peter provides advice and counsel on labor and employment law, education and municipal law, and corporate and public governance issues. He serves as lead employment counsel for some of the premier employers in Maine, including L.L. Bean. Peter advises on governance, investigations, fiduciary duties, freedom of access, risk management, and personnel matters.

Benjamin W. Lund
Ben has decades of experience in sophisticated commercial transactions for national and international businesses, including many of Brann & Isaacson’s multi-channel marketing clients. He represents clients in a wide range of real estate and corporate matters, taxation and immigration law issues

Daniel A. Nuzzi
Dan directs the firm’s general litigation practice, handling complex business litigation matters in numerous state and federal courts, as well as before administrative agencies. He has tried to jury verdict or final judgment several multi-million dollar cases. His varied practice includes employment, class-action, contractual, construction, real estate, product liability, copyright, and commercial and corporate law cases.

Jamie T. Szal
Jamie focuses her practice on assisting businesses in all aspects of state and local tax controversy, from regulatory and administrative proceedings through civil litigation. In the wake of the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, in which Brann & Isaacson represented Wayfair, she also works with remote retailers of all sizes to evaluate their economic nexus profile, consider a sales and use tax collection action plan, and register with state and local tax authorities across the U.S.

Eamonn R.C. Hart
Eamonn works primarily in the firm’s litigation practice, focusing on issues such as employment, business disputes, privacy, false claims litigation, and state tax disputes, among others. He also occasionally advises clients on non-litigation matters, such as tariff compliance and employment best practices.
