After recording the 1st win of the season last night, the IronBirds (1-5) will look to make it two wins in a row today against the Staten Island Yankees (2-3) in the 1st game of the 3-game series in Staten Island.
While Sebastian Vader dominated last night in 8 scoreless innings and struck out 10 while only allowing 3 hits, the IronBirds led 4-0 going into the bottom of the 9th after an RBI single from Hector Veloz in the 3rd and a 3-run 7th inning capped off with another RBI single from Veloz, but then came the dramatics.
Williams Louico came in for Vader to close out the game, but the Brooklyn Cyclones had other plans, scoring 4 runs ( 2 off wild pitches) to tie the game and send it to extra innings. SS Jared Breen led off the 10th by drawing a walk, then stole second ( He had 2 SB's last night) with no outs. Kris Richards then played the part of Hero, scoring Breen on a 2-out RBI single to center field and putting Aberdeen back up, 5-4. LHP Jorge Rivera then closed out the 10th inning effectively ( Also got the W), final score, 5-4 IronBirds!
RHP David Richardson will take the mound for Aberdeen, and is making his 2nd start of the season. Richardson was the victim of a huge 4th inning against the Renegades back on the 18th, and was tagged for 7 runs on 6 hits in 3.1 Innings. On a positive note, he did have 5 K's in that game.
RHP Philip Walby will take the mound for the Staten Island Yankees in his professional debut after being drafted in the 12th round by the New York Yankees in the 2013 MLB draft out of San Diego State. In 2013, the 20-year-old went 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA for the Aztecs in 17 games (15 starts). He also had 57 K's in 94.1 Innings. On a side note, Walby was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 50th round of the 2010 MLB draft out of Scripps Ranch HS (San Diego, CA), but Walby wisely went to SD State. The result? Getting drafted 38 round higher just three years later.
IRONBIRDS LINE-UP 6/23: vs Staten Island Yankees: SS Breen, LF Kimmel, 3B Veloz, 1B Mancini, 2B Richards, RF Bierfeldt, C Wynns, DH Rust, CF Vega, SP David Richardson.
That's all I have for now IronBirds Nation!!! I will be providing in-game updates and commentary on IBN's twitter today, so be sure to tune in!!! A game recap will be up shortly after the game goes final at IBN. Until game time IronBirds Nation, take it easy and enjoy the game!!!
