Japan Wins Cal Ripken World Series

Cal Ripken World Series championship brings eyes of the youth baseball world to Aberdeen.

UPDATED (9:30 p.m.)——For the first time since its championship moved to Aberdeen, the Cal Ripken World Series trophy belongs to Japan.

Japan defeated South Lexington, KY, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Cal Sr.'s Yard in Aberdeen. The game was delayed approximately 90 minutes because of rain and thunderstorms.

Japan stole eight bases, led by Taisei Takeoka's three.

Kosuke Moita and Kazuki Sakurai combined for the shutout, holding the Ohio Valley champs to one hit.

Lexington advanced Saturday, defeating then-unbeaten Oahu, HI, 10-0, in the U.S. Championship. It was simply part of a series of events that marked a big day Lexington youth baseball.

Japan defeated the Dominican Republic, 10-3, to advance.

The championship was broadcast on the MLB Network, and locally on WAMD 970 AM and SFMSports.net.
