Fires Planned at APG on Thursday

BREAKING: It may be smoky near Aberdeen Proving Ground due to controlled burns.

ABERDEEN, MD — Don't be surprised if it smells like something is burning or you see smoke near Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG).

APG and fire department officials will conduct controlled burns Thursday on post. The purpose is to minimize the risk of wildfires and keep the landscape primed for testing and training activities.

"Prescribed burning is the safest and most cost-effective way to maintain APG ranges due to unexploded ordnance concerns," APG officials said in a statement Thursday morning.

The controlled burns are planned for downrange areas. Officials from the U.S. Army Test Center and APG Department of Fire and Emergency Services will be working together to minimize the impact of smoke on communities both on post and in the nearby neighborhoods.

The controlled burns will take place on Thursday, Jan. 26.
