Gas Leak Shut Down US 40 Near Aberdeen Friday

Hazmat and utility crews handled the incident on Route 40 Friday night, according to Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

ABERDEEN, MD — All lanes of US 40 were temporarily shut down Friday night near Aberdeen due to a gas leak.

Crews were in the 600 block of Old Philadelphia Road tending to the utility issue reported at 9:32 p.m., according to Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association spokeswoman Jenn Chenworth.

A relief valve had activated on a compressed natural gas filling station, Chenworth said.

Route 40 was closed between James and Carole avenues for the response until approximately 11:30 p.m.

Personnel from the Harford County hazardous materials team, Aberdeen Fire Department, Trillum CNG and BGE reportedly converged at the scene. BGE turned off the relief valve, and the hazmat team was on hand because of the amount of natural gas being expelled, according to officials.
