Lidl Opening In Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, MD—New grocery store Lidl is opening Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Aberdeen. It will be the second store in Maryland for the German-based company, which opened in Bowie in September.

The first 100 shoppers at the Aberdeen store Wednesday will receive a wooden coin redeemable for a special gift card ranging from $5 to $100. At the grand opening, people can also sample Lidl’s products and get a complimentary reusable Lidl bag while supplies last.

Grand opening activities will continue through the weekend, with deals, prizes and giveaways.

“We are thrilled to continue our expansion in Maryland, and the team and I cannot wait to introduce Lidl to customers in Aberdeen this month,” Store Manager Aneka Braham said in a statement.

Braham will hold a ribbon-cutting at 7:40 a.m., followed by the Aberdeen store opening at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Here are some things to expect at the Aberdeen Lidl (pronounced LEE'-dull; rhymes with needle):

The store will have a bakery at the entrance.

It's a brand-new facility with six aisles, making the layout easy for shoppers to navigate.

Lidl sells various organic and gluten-free items, from vegetables to meat to dairy and more. Nine out of ten high-quality products sold at Lidl are its exclusive private label brand.

Non-food offerings — such as fitness gear, small kitchen appliances, toys, outdoor furniture and other items — will rotate and be offered for a limited time.

German-based Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 29 countries. It first opened in 1973 south of Frankfurt, Germany, and has been expanding into the United States in recent years, competing with fellow German grocer Aldi. In 2015, Lidl opened its U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

It was named the third best supermarket in the U.S. by Food & Wine for 2018, after Wegmans and the HEB-operated Central Market chain in Texas.

The new Aberdeen Lidl store will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

It is located at 621 South Philadelphia Boulevard in Aberdeen.
